Class Description

We strive to instil in each student the spirit of compassion, teamwork, leadership and ethical behaviour in a holistic, stimulating, challenging and safe learning environment.

We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum incorporated with Jolly Phonics Program and the International Early Years Curriculum to enrich the learning process. Oshwal Academy Nairobi Nursery provides the opportunity for our students to learn the skills necessary to further their education and to function successfully in an enabling environment in the modern world. We strive to develop each student’s intellectual, emotional, physical and social growth to their full potential.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Personal, social and emotional development, is about enabling children to develop a positive sense of themselves and others, to form a positive relationship a develop respect for others, social skills and learn how to manage their feelings.

Communication and Language

Communication and language development are about giving children opportunities to experience a rich language environment, develop confidence and skills in expressing themselves and to speak and listen in a range of situations.

Understanding of the World

Understanding the world is about guiding children to make sense of their physical world and their community through opportunities to explore, observe and find out about people, places and technology.

Literacy

Literacy development is about encouraging learners to link sound to letters, read words with three letters, four letters, digraphs and magic e words. Children are given access to a wide range of reading materials (books, poems and other written materials) to get the learners interested. Learners get the opportunity to tackle simple comprehension questions to help them in comprehending what they’ve read. The Jolly Phonics programme continues throughout the school years, by extending the earlier phonics teaching with further spelling, grammar and punctuation concepts. Each year of teaching provides continuous revision and consolidation of topics taught in previous years. Children are also taught the core concepts of grammar and punctuation, starting with simple age-appropriate definitions, which are gradually built on with each year of teaching. The teaching continues to be multi-sensory with actions and colour coding (fitting with Montessori) for parts of speech to help children develop their understanding of how language works. The systematic programme supports children by giving them the tools that they need to independently write what they want clearly and with expression.

Expressive Arts and Design

Expressive arts and designs are about enabling children to explore and play with a wide range of media and material, as well as providing opportunities and encouragement for sharing thoughts, ideas and feelings through a  variety of activities in art, music, dance, role-play, design and technology.

Numeracy

Maths is providing children with the opportunities to develop and improve their skills in counting, understanding and using numbers, calculating simple addition, subtraction problem solving, understanding different number language; and describing shapes, space and measures.

Physical development

Physical development is about providing opportunities to be active, interact and develop coordination control and movement. Children get the opportunity to understand the importance of healthy living.
