Class Description

Our Playgroup provides early year’s education and care for children, generally between the ages of 1.5 and 2.5 years for about four hours per day. We provide a safe, well-planned environment, which encourages children to learn through play.

Our learning offers a wide choice of activities and a variety of play facilities appropriate to their age and stage of development. We use curriculum guidance for the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), which drives the children’s learning and development into prime areas learning and specific areas.

We monitor and assess the progress of each child and use this information to plan and provide a range of activities that will help the child develop in each area of learning. We also identify areas of need.

Learning Through play

Learning happens through play. Play helps young children to develop their physical, social, emotional and intellectual skills. They also learn to socialize through play.

They learn to share and build relationship with each other and adults

EYFS explains how and what children will be learning to support their healthy development. Children will be learning skills, acquiring new knowledge and demonstrating their understanding through 7 areas of learning 3 of which are the prime areas

  • Communication and language;
  • Physical development;
  • Personal, social and emotional development.

These prime areas are most essential for the child’s healthy development and future learning. As children grow and become more skilled in the 4 specific areas.

These are:

  1. Literacy;
  2. Mathematics;
  3. Understanding the world;
  4. Expressive arts and design.

Physical development

Playgroups have wonderful opportunities to develop physically.  Teachers offer enrichment opportunities along with the use of indoor and outdoor equipment.

  • Running, climbing and jumping
  • Sand play, sliding and cycling
  • Horse riding
Mathematics

Most concepts are learned as children go about their day engaged in developmentally appropriate play.  As children begin a project they are encouraged to complete it, this instils the pre-math concept of completion.  During clean-up, children are able to sort and classify as they put away materials in their assigned areas.  During water play and sand play, children are exposed to weights and measurements.  As children build in the block area they are exposed to spatial relationships and gravity. They are introduced to number symbols too.

  • Problem-solving
  • Matching and classifying
  • Completion of projects
  • Group objects in categories
  • Basic introduction to size and weights
Expressive Arts and Design

Playgroup has the opportunity to work individually and, in a group, to promote socialization.

  • Recognizing the needs of others
  • Role playing
  • Learning to deal with conflict
  • Singing, dancing and mimicking
  • Participation in block building, creative arts and dramatic play with other children
  • Finding the joy in craft activities
  • Music and movement
Learning Journals

We observe each child by assessing how they learn and develop. We use this information, along with evidence from photographs, to document their progress to inform us of their next steps of learning. We update parents regularly through informal discussions when they pick their child and we create a Learning Journal for each child in our care.

Learning Journals enable us celebrate each child’s achievements and to work together with parents to provide the best care possible for the needs of the child.
