This is a type of learning that involves asking questions to the learners or more so the learners given a chance to learn by asking questions, little children as young as one year old always have a lot of questions concerning the world, we live in.
Discovery is really important in early childhood education because it improves the understanding of the learner. The learner will be able to gain more knowledge and correct skills through discovery learning.
Inquiry learning is equally important because it focuses on investigating an open case where it enhances the reasoning of the learner and his/her creative problem-solving skills to reach a final conclusion.
The role of a teacher in an inquiry-based program is to unlock the learners mind from general curiosity into a space of critical thinking and understanding.
The benefits:
- Inquiry based learning keeps the learner engaged because we listen to the learner’s questions and give room for an open discussion, they get to learn more by the questions and the answers given.
- Learning through question helps build more understanding on a given topic, learners are able to gain more knowledge surrounding the specific topic that is being studied, and encouraging them to ask questions can help them get more information on the given topic.
- Inquiry based learning is really beneficial to the learners as it fills in the gap where the learner did not fully understand the concept, by asking questions the teacher will identify the gaps and fill to correct the misunderstanding and explain in a better way.
- Inquiry based learning helps in capturing the attention of the learning in such a way that it makes the learners alert and aware that a question is being asked and more information is given, every child always wants to be the best.
There are three prime areas of core learning in the curriculum used in our school which is communication and language (speaking, listening and expression); physical development; personal, social and emotional development. Inquiry based learning is well integrated because it touches on the core learning areas in our curriculum especially on the language and communication part, it reinforces the curriculum content.
