Dyslexia is a specific learning difficulty; it impacts reading, writing and spelling. It challenges an individual’s capability in breaking words into their component phoneme. Mostly it is intricate learning for our learner’s despite their intelligence, it creates an anti-academic attitude in children.     

 

Symptoms:  

 Early age:  

  • Delayed in speech.  
  • Takes time in learning new words.  
  • Problem forming words correctly, such as reversing sounds in words or confusing words that sounds same.  
  • Difficulty in remembering or naming letters, numbers and colours.  
  • Difficulty in learning rhymes.  

At school:   

  • Reading well below the expected level for age.  
  • The problem in processing information and instruction.  
  • Difficulty in forming questions and answers.  
  • The problem in remembering the sequence.  
  • Difficulty in understanding similarities and differences.  
  • Difficulty in spelling.  
  • Avoid activities involving reading and writing.  
  • Need excess time to read and write. 
  • Reverse writing.  
  • As reading is an important skill which is also basic to most other schools’ subjects, individual with dyslexia is the disadvantage in most classes and may have trouble keeping up with peers.   

Severity varies, but the condition often becomes apparent as a child starts to learn to read.  Most of the time people consider it as slow learning and it goes unidentified for years.  Early identification, regular assessment and modified teaching methods are the treatment process in this condition.
